C.A.T. working with Calne Town Council to erect information boards across the Town

Working through consultation with members of the public in 2008 CAT carried out a project, The Go-Between Project, which looked for gaps in transport information and delivery. This was followed by the Cycle and Footpath project 2010/11 and a public transport meeting in June 2011. Calne Area Transport realised that many members of the public were unable to easily access information on the routes across and within their town. A route map of the town, displayed in public areas, showing safe cycle and pedestrian routes, the legally permitted uses of these routes and how they linked residential areas with the town centre, the sports areas and the schools would be invaluable. Signage linking the areas and the maps would also be essential.

Not only would this be advantageous to people already living in and around Calne, but to newcomers and tourists it would be an excellent information tool. These maps placed in busy locations would be the source of immediate advice.

It has been decided that 9 sites would benefit from the boards. They are

Holy Trinity School

The Grove Youth Centre

Entrance to the housing estate at junction of A4 and Greenacres Way.

C.A.T. Designs Transport Plan for Calne Campus Project

C.A.T. Has is taking a leading role in the formulation of the Transport Plan for the Calne Campus project.
The Campus Project team is presenting a report to t he Area Board on 14th February at their meeting in the Town Hall. It is envisaged, after two community consultations, the Campus may well end up with three sites. This means that transport will be pivotal in the success in delivering the services that they hope to provide. The Transport plan includes provision for a transport hub enabling easy interchange and information on travel in and around the community area and beyond. Calne Area Transport attends the Calne Showcase at Beversbrook Sports Centre on Friday 28th October. The event was attended by Bob Neill MP, who is Parliamentary Under Secretary for Communities,and local M.P. James Gray and mayors from Warminster, Chippenham and Calne. On display were C.A.T’s Go-Between project, Transport Forum and C.A.T.’s Calne map with cycle and mobility scooter short cuts.

Forum votes to halve subsidy to over sixty’s bus pass!

In a surprise move at the forum, Ian White asked the audience, who were mainly over sixty, whether they would be willing to give up half the subsidy on their bus pass so that young people 19 and under could have the same half fare privilege. A majority of the audience said they would be in favour. Read more about the forum here

Discussion on long term future of public transport

Calne Area Transport (CAT) has conducted an in depth survey of public opinion on current opinions on public transport ahead of an Open meeting. This public meeting will feature Cllr. Dick Tonge, Wiltshire Council’s Lead member on Transport and Highways.

Come to Calne Town Hall on Thursday 30th June 6.30pm for 7.00pm to hear what he has to say on the survey’s findings.

Come early to to enjoy some refreshments and a chat with other local people concerned about public transport.

CAT Cycle Project presented to the Calne Area Board

A presentation was made to the last Area Board meeting, 19 April, by Anne Henshaw and Alan Gray of CAT, on the results of the Cycling and Footpath project. The assessment made by CAT is now being considered by the Area Board.

Cuts to bus services are on the Council agenda. Although claims are made that only a small proportion of bus services are likely to be cut (for the present) most cuts will fall on the rural areas leaving vulnerable people stranded. If this should continue then there could be a knock-on impact on families without cars, those intending to give them up and those running rural businesses.

Options could be considering increasing parish precepts to cover the gap in subsidies for vital services, or self-help options such as buying a minibus or securing taxibuses or volunteer cars to link in with retained bus services.

Given the recent rise in fuel costs, many people are reconsidering their car use, so promoting awareness of bus services could help attract new users to increase the viability of buses that are under threat.

New Project for CAT

The group has recently received funding from the Community Foundation for Wiltshire and Swindon and the Calne Area Board to carry out a Cycle and Footpath Project.

The project is run entirely by local volunteers.

The aim of the project is to assess the cycle and footpath network in Calne for its appropriateness in delivering fairer, safer and environmentally sustainable travel. Traffic and congestion has increased over the past 12 years and one of CATs core objectives is to promote less car use for local journeys and to improve alternative access within the town as well as to and from the countryside.

Our programme will include identifying problem areas and proposing desirable routes as well as providing an updatable cycling and walking map. We will recommend appropriate forward planning and a design for a phased programme and action plan.

The project will be completed by the end of March 2011 and will be presented in the form of a Report to the Calne Area Board.

CAT working with CCAP to reduce lighting carbon footprint

Calne Area Transport is working with Calne Community Area Partnership and Wiltshire Council to find places in the Area where street lighting could be reduced at certain times of the night. This would help to reduce
the area’s carbon footprint, light pollution and energy costs.
